Hinagdanan Cave

Panglao's secret

The Hinagdanan Cave can be found on the island of Panglao in the Bohol province of the Philippines. Made of limestone, Hinagdanan Cave is naturally lit by sunlight filtering through holes in its rocky ceiling, which in turn creates some amazing lighting effects.
As in the area of Anda, Bohol, in Panglao there are also underground caves to visit (the so-called cenotes). The best known and most easily accessible is Hinagdanan Cave.

A few years ago, by chance, a local farmer discovered its entrance. With a rudimentary bamboo ladder he managed to access its interior, where he was completely amazed at what he found. In addition, the different zenithal openings of the cave let the sun's rays pass through and illuminate the cave naturally, creating a true visual spectacle.

The cave is protected by the Bohol Department of Tourism and you have to pay to enter, thus helping to maintain this unique place. If you have brought some booties on your trip, it is an ideal place to use them and thus avoid a possible slip on the wet ground of your entrance, as well as to step more safely on the rocks of the inside the natural pool.

🔅 This cave has become an essential thing to see in Panglao, so it won't be uncommon for you to find other travelers. Even so, we advise you to try to make your visit from Monday to Friday and avoid local holidays. It has more charm that way.

Quick Travel guide to Panglao, Philippines

Some tips to enjoy your travel to this amazing destination and how to choose your tours and experience.

The small island of Panglao is a classic in many of the trips to the Philippines that include Bohol among its different destinations. Linked to it through two large bridges over the sea, it is a place chosen by many travelers to establish their base when discovering the different things to do in Bohol. Like any other place in the world, Panglao has its detractors and its lovers and in this quick guide we are going to unravel all its secrets so that you can decide for yourself if it is the place you are looking for. Grab your diving mask and sunscreen, let's get started!

Diving and snorkelling in Panglao
Diving in Panglao is the "jewel in the crown", one of the main reasons that attracts thousands of tourists to the Alona Beach area. Here you will find a large number of diving schools from which to contract your dives to the more than 20 nearby diving points. The best known, and which acts as a true magnet for divers from all over the world, is Balicasag. It is impossible to dive in Balicasag and not fall in love with this place!
One of its most famous dive spots is “Black Forest”. Its biodiversity will leave you speechless: groupers, barracudas, lots of macro life, damsels, a spectacular black coral forest that gives the place its name and, of course, lots of turtles walking around the area!
It is important that you know that Balicasag is, luckily, a protected island. This means that only 150 people are allowed to dive each day, which can make 2 dives. Therefore, it is important that you book early so as not to run out of space.

Historical buildings to see in Panglao: Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and Church of San Agustín

First of all, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, or Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, is located next to the southern bridge that connects Panglao Island with Bohol.
Completed in 1753, this religious building has been rebuilt up to five times due to the different fires and earthquakes it has had to face, the most recent in 2013. This has turned it into a church that brings together a fusion of styles ranging from neoclassical to gothic, with a colorful interior based on frescoes and altarpieces from different periods.
The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Bohol attracts pilgrims from all over the Philippines, as legend has it that the water under the main altar has healing powers. During the Spanish occupation there were constant pirate attacks on the different Christian settlements in search of gold and other valuables. The inhabitants of the area took refuge inside this church during one of these attacks and when after several days of siege they ran out of water or food, the miracle worked and under the altar this source of drinking water began to sprout. For this reason, today it is very common to see believers arrive with empty bottles and leave the church loaded with liters and liters of “miraculous” water.
On the other hand, the Church of San Agustín or St. Augustine Parish Church is another interesting place to discover in Panglao if you are en route to the beaches of Doljo or Momo. It is located in the "capital" of the island, in Poblacion and, although the current building was inaugurated in 1924, the previous one, which was left in ruins, was built by the Jesuits in 1782. If it is open, do not hesitate to enter (it is free) and take a look at both the altarpieces and the ceiling murals. Next to it you can see an interesting five-story octagonal bell tower made of stone. This was opened in 1851..

Panglao's amazing beaches:

The first beach that usually comes to mind when talking about Panglao is Alona Beach, since it is practically the epicenter of the action of this small island. The vast majority of excursions depart from here, both for diving and to visit places like the Chocolate Hills of Bohol, but it does not stand out precisely for being the most beautiful beach in the area.
Due to the advance of the water and the loss of sand, as well as the constructions that have been on the seafront for decades, many stretches of the beach are not very paradisiacal. Even so, in front of the Henann resort and at the opposite end, it is always very calm and it is possible to swim even when the tide is low. It is, in short, a beach to take a refreshing swim without more, but very nice if you are looking for good restaurants or resorts on the seashore.

Dumaluan Beach: Dumaluan Beach is also known as White Beach and is, in our opinion, the most beautiful beach to see in Panglao. This coastal area with crystal clear waters and white sand stands out because when the tide is low you have to walk a few meters for the water to cover you. Along the shore you will see different places to eat, a great attraction for Filipino tourists who come to barbecue with their families. In the Panglao DBR Grill they serve some delicious shakes. Keep it in mind on your list of things to do in Panglao! It is usually very quiet from Monday to Thursday at the height of the sun and the most beautiful part is where the South Palms Resort is located. If you drink at this last resort, the entrance to it is free and the cocktails are 150 pesos, so it's great.

Danao Beach: On the western edge of Panglao is our favorite beach to watch the sunset. It will take you only 15 minutes from Alona Bach and you will quickly see that the atmosphere is much calmer. Far fewer tourists and just the occasional resort where you can cool off with a beer while enjoying the sunset among orange, lilac and red colors that will steal your heart. In addition, this beach has a large colony of starfish of all colors. Unfortunately, depending on the tide, it sometimes has some litter. It is something recurrent in many Philippine beaches. The plastic comes from the sea and the resorts are responsible for collecting only their part. We always dedicate some time (with 5-10 minutes you make a big difference) to make small collections. Also, there is an association called Plastic Free Bohol, which does an amazing job of collecting in Danao and other beaches in the area. You can join them!
